I headed home and went for a run instead - nowt like preparing for a run by going for one. It was only an hour, but just over 6kms, incorporating Wilton bush, Johnson´s Hill, and a couple of rainbow lorikeets.Getting back onto the final flat section, I automatically went into the multi-sport trudge - slightly hunched over, small steps, covering the distance but at no great pace. However, deciding to push a little harder (I was running late), I stood tall, unfurled my shoulders, expanded my gait and discovered it was actually easier to run at that faster pace - I´ll make a runner yet!
Once back, I did a very quick change and headed off to see my weekly tormentor (and physio) Libby.
Despite the extensions and strengthening I´d put in, my back is still very stiff and referring pain into my hip. Generally it´s getting better, but because my left glute is weaker than my right, I´m not as stable as I should be through my back, so it holds itself tight to prevent further injury.
And I´m ignoring the recurring discomfort in my left ankle....
Four days of complete bed rest - by the end of it your back won't be hurting any more, but you'll plenty else to worry about! I'm sure my hip's getting weaker by the moment and I really should start the strengthening exercises again. I'm going to be back to training for a 5k by the time I feel ready to put the running shoes back on.
ReplyDeleteAre you icing the ankle? It's all about the maintenance!
ahhhh. ice :) once upon a time i added it to drinks.....how things change :D
ReplyDeleteExcellent suggestion Pip. The thing about ice is... it's cold! Having said that, I need to ice the whole body at the mo... post coming about that, when I wake up.
ReplyDeletei'm icing my ITB today after a long ride in the hills today. even though i've peaked things still flare up on and off......to say i'm looking forward to just running the Kepler already is an under statement!
ReplyDeleteGood blog - I'm a fellow Kepler entrant (first time). I check your blog each Monday to see how your training is going.
ReplyDeleteI would offer a single piece of advice regarding your back pain - see an Osteopath. I had back trouble for years and all manner of treatment and exercises recommended by Physios and Chiropractors made little difference. Then I visited an Osteopath and they had me sorted and pain-free within a few sessions. I'm in Lower Hutt and used AK Osteopaths - they were excellent.
Good luck for the Kepler - see you on the course! I did my final big-run on the weekend (50km, with 2000 metres of climb).....I fell ready for the big day :-)
Thanks Paul and Anonymous. Things are great and going well... the body is back on track (even if the mind continues to procrastinate about training!)
ReplyDeleteYes, definitely looking forward to completing the Kepler. There'll be large drinks all round at the end - see you in the lake!
